A review on "L2 Collaborative E-writing" written by Cristina Pardo-Ballestera and Adolfo Carrillo Cabellob
The third article I read is about the students’ perception
in collaborative writing. Differ from the previous articles that mostly talk
about the benefits of collaborative writing, this article shows me one of the
crucial factors contributing the successful of collaborative writing that
is students’ perception.
Many researches has been conducted to investigate how good
collaborative writing improves students' writing skill through peer-correction
that they apply in the process of writing.
This kind of studies only focus
on the improvement that students experience by participating in a collaborative
writing without consider the students’ perception about collaborative writing
itself. In fact, students’ perception is one of crucial aspects in the writing
process because it also contributes on their writing successful. A study investigating students’ perception on
online collaborative writing conducted by Ballester and Cabello proves that a
question whether collaborative writing is effective or not in the students’
writing process depends on the their perception on that. The chance in which
they can establish their ability in a more open learning community and give
feedback to their peers can be one of effective way to built students’ positive
perceptions. Moreover, there are some
principles we need to consider as determining factors of the successful of
collaborative involving their ability in writing and their perception on it.
Firstly, a clear guideline should be provided for the students stating what and
how to edit assignments. Secondly, the teacher may consider whether the
peer-review task will be done in class or outside the class. The teaching
process itself is also crucial for students in improving their writing
abilities. Students’ perception must be positive in doing peer-review task
because peer-review one of the final step in collaborative writing. if there is
no good perception, the final step will affect the whole process of
collaborative writing.
